The syntheses, characterizations and crystal structures of 5-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-15,20-diphenyl-10-(4-methoxy)phenyl-21,23-dithiaporphyrin (1b) and 2,3-dimethoxy-10,15-diphenyl-21,23-dithiaporphyrin (2) are described. The cyclization of 2-[1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1-pyrrolomethyl]-5-(1-phenyl-1-pyrrolomethyl)thiophene and 2-[1-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1-hydroxymethyl]-5-(1-phenyl-1-hydroxymethyl)thiophene gave predominantly the cis-[ABC2] substitution pattern and the meso-phenyl groups substantially affect the wavelength and the efficiency of the absorption in dithiaporphyrin 2.

A new succinyloxyl-bridged porphyrin dimer has been synthesized and characterized by UV-vis, IR, 1H NMR spectra and mass spectra. Its photovoltaic properties, charge-transfer process, fluorescent property and electrochemical property have been investigated by surface photovoltage spectroscopy, electric-field-induced surface photovoltage spectroscopy techniques, emission spectra and cyclic voltammetry, respectively.

Treatment of 2-ethylidene-3-hydroxy-5-cyanoheptaethylchlorin nickel complex with a mixture of 5% of trifluoroacetic acid and dichloromethane yielded a novel type porphyrin-porphyrin dimer with a condensed cyclohexane ring in an almost quantitative yield. The structure of this dimer was determined by a single crystal X-ray analysis.

The nitrone substituted metal phthalocyanine complexes with M = Co (1), Ni (2) and Cu (3) as the central metal atom are synthesized in pure state. These complexes are characterized using elemental analysis, UV-visible, IR-spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility, X-ray crystallography, and thermogravimetry. Kinetic and thermodyanamic parameters associated with the thermal decomposition of the above complexes are calculated using three different mathematical models and the results are compared. Electrical conductivity studies are done for all the three complexes using two-probe technique in the temperature range 30 to 200 °C. All the three complexes are having the monoclinic structure with different crystal lattice constants.

K562 cell line loaded with porphyrin compounds and their Zn complexes were subjected to photodynamic therapy. The leukaemic cell line displayed lower proliferative capacity compared to control, the reduced proliferative capacity being maintained at least 72 h after irradiation. After photodynamic therapy one family of compounds totally abolished the proliferative capacity of K562.

Cytochrome c3 is an electron transfer protein containing four hemes per molecule which donate electrons to hydrogenase. Chemical modification and point mutation study showed that a positive charge around heme IV especially Lys72 plays an important role in interaction with hydrogenase.
